Are You Ready To Negotiate?

Today was the negotiation exercise and, wow! That was a fun time! My partner (I think his name is Paco) and I got along well which I think helped make the tensions not so high. It got me thinking though, how can I be a better negotiator at work? How can I be a better negotiator when buying a car? I think the basics are the same so I searched for an article that would give me some easy steps to grow my negotiating skills. The article I found was, realmenrealstyle.com/better-negotiator/. They even have a neat little video to boot!
What I took away from the seven steps he article presents was:
1. Most people are not good at negotiating. Just knowing a few tactics can give you the advantage.
2. There is a need to understand what you want from the negotiation and what you are willing to take and where you know you should walk away. Also, don't forget about the little things you are negotiating for.
3. Keep in mind who it is you're negotiating with. Is it your boss? Your buddy? A car salesman? Understanding that person will help you out.
4. Understand well the long lasting impacts of terms and outcomes of negotiations.
5. If you know where you stand, make the first offer so that you can better your chances of exceeding your BATNA.
6. Try to keep a balanced level of fairness. If someone thinks they are being treated unfairly then they may feel they have to fight you back harder.
7. Try to create a win-win situation
These are things I will definitely keep in mind the next time I enter a negotiation.
